Pre-kids I thought that I could eat anything I wanted, as long as in moderation, and remain healthy. I also thought that the stuff we put on our skin and used to clean our houses didn’t matter. Then I had kids and my world changed. All of a sudden I started looking at ingredients in everything. I wouldn’t say I became paranoid, but….well, okay I became paranoid. I became crunchy. I became a granola. I became a hippie. Basically, I turned crazy. It’s like my husband got a brand new wife after we had kids. I’m pretty confident he still loves me though. He just laughs at me, rolls his eyes and goes along with it. Gotta love him!
So, why diy toilet bowl cleaner? Well, first of all we ran out of regular toilet bowl cleaner and I try to go to the grocery store the least amount possible. And our toilet NEEDS to be cleaned. Now! How did I let it get so bad?? Oh, right – laziness! Second, there is some bad stuff in those store bought cleaners. When the bottle says that you should wear gloves and not breathe in the fumes, it can’t be good for you, right? If it can burn your skin and hurt your lungs or your brain cells, why are we using it again? That’s why diy toilet bowl cleaner.
After searching the internet for the best recipe I came across two that I liked: one from My Merry Messy Life and another from Live Simply. I somehow am out of baking soda right now (which is crazy because I buy those huge bags – shows how much I use baking soda around the house!), so I am going to try combining the recipes from these two sites and make my own. Here is what I came up with:
DIY TOILET BOWL CLEANER RECIPE
- 1/4 cup Castile Soap
- 1/8 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
- 1 3/4 cup Water
- (Optional) 10-20 drops essential oils (such as lemon, lavender, peppermint, thieves, tea tree, eucalyptus, orange, etc.)
I stored this in an old shampoo bottle, but any bottle that you are able to squirt into the toilet like regular toilet bowl cleaner should do the trick. Below is the before and after picture. Don’t judge me.
I used the peppermint Castile Soap and it was a very pleasant smell while cleaning the toilet. A little strong, but much better than a chemical smell. To clean the remainder of the toilet I used these baby wipes:
I love these baby wipes. They are gentle on my boy, they smell great, decompose in 21 days, made out of bamboo, as natural ingredients as possible, etc. They are awesome. And when using them for cleaning they have a way better texture and capture the dirt particles way better than Lysol wipes which just seems to push stuff around for me.
Do you have a favorite toilet bowl cleaner? Have you ever tried a homemade recipe?
