Full Moon in Cancer – January 13, 2025
This full moon will have us feeling more emotionally sensitive and ready to protect those we love. It also will have us revisiting old patterns and wounds in our home life or ancestry, and highlighting how and where we need to create a sanctuary for ourselves heading into this year. Read on for more info.
What Are Full Moons in Astrology?
Full Moons occur when the Sun and the Moon are exactly opposite each other on the astrological wheel vs at New Moons when the Sun and the Moon are conjunct (at the same spot) together. The Sun represents our identity, our ego, our sense of self, and vitality. The Moon represents our internal, subjective, and emotional world. When these are together at a New Moon, our ego and where we want to move forward in life is in alignment with how we are feeling emotionally. This is why New Moons are a great time for new beginnings, planting new seeds of intention and setting goals. At the Full Moon, our ego and drive are in opposition with our emotional landscape, in effect, calling us to take a minute to ensure that we are being balanced in our approach. It also is generally a time when if we’ve been working on a goal or if a new beginning has started, some progress should be able to be seen. It’s a time of reviewing what is going right and keeping us moving in the right direction and a time for shining light on and releasing what we’ve been working on that is no longer moving us in a direction of growth. The full moon highlights what we need to let go of, or how we need to pivot or modify things, in order to keep moving forward.
Lessons of a Full Moon in Cancer
Wherever the Full Moon lands is where our emotional landscape will be focused on, and where we are being asked to seek balance. This Full Moon is in Cancer. On a personal level, Cancer represents our home (including our house), family, and inner emotional world. It represents familial bonds, ancestry, maternal instincts, nurturing, emotional intelligence. Cancer seeks physical, emotional, and financial security. It is where we build our strong personal foundations. As the crab, it can also be where we are very protective of our home, family, and guarding our emotional world.
On a more global and political level, Cancer represents our connection to our homeland, cultural roots and ancestral traditions. It often represents public sentiment and national identity. Because its the sign of nurturing, it can also represent healthcare, welfare, child protection and care giving industries.
To an extreme, Cancer energy can be overly protective or clingy, moody, and may struggle with letting go and/or being too nostalgic. On a wider scale, Cancer energy can lead to excessive nationalism or policies rooted in fear of external threats, and governing based on sentiment rather than rationality.
Contrast all this with Capricorn (where the Sun is) which on a personal level is more goal-oriented, valuing success and recognition. It thrives on routines, order and building solid foundations. They are known to climb mountains to achieve their success.
On a more global scale, Capricorn represents governments, corporations and hierarchies. It rules over laws, policies, and systems that maintain social order. It covers infrastructure and economic development.
To an extreme, Capricorn energy can be workaholics, overly focused on material success and can struggle with vulnerability and any type of emotional expression (or even understanding what their emotions are saying). On a wider scale, the Capricorn energy can lead to oppressive systems, authoritarian regimes, and/or resistance to necessary change. A focus on profit can lead to neglect of emotional or humanitarian concerns.
These are the energies we are being asked to balance, within our own lives and on a collective level.
What Makes This Full Moon in Cancer Different – The Aspects & Conversations Its Having With Other Planets

Conjunct Mars Retrograde at 27 degrees
Mars is not comfortable retrograde and its not comfortable in Cancer either. Mars rules our desires, motivations, willpower, our warrior spirit, and also our harder emotions like frustration and anger. Then, conjunct the Moon which rules our emotions and our sense of emotional safety overall, this is bound to be a very emotionally charged Full Moon. Frustrations and anger that either haven’t been communicated or haven’t been realized in regards to the home, family, etc. may be likely to surface. Although this can seem like a burden, even our harder emotions are part of our Emotional Guidance System. Where frustrations come up, listen to them, go internally (like the retrograde motion is suggesting) to see and understand what it is trying to tell you. There is often deep wisdom hidden beneath the frustration or anger. What is being illuminated that you can fix and heal once you fully grasp it and Mars turns direct? Especially as it relates to Cancer themes of home, family, ancestry, emotional safety and stability, etc. You may also be more likely to want to be very protective of your home and family. The retrograde motion also is asking us to look at prior motivations and desires as it relates to our home and family and if those motivations and desires still exist or if they need an upgrade.
On a global or geo-political level this addition of Mars Retrograde can be seen as reviewing past motivations and desires regarding land and national security, as well as feeling very protective of your land. This can be seen with President Trump revisiting the Panama Canal, Greenland, and Canada. The caution is to not get wrapped up in the emotion of it all and maintain some logic and long-term vision (which would be the opposite side of Capricorn). In addition, Mars can represent fire, especially when either in a fire sign or in a harsh aspect with the Sun, Saturn or Uranus. Cancer represents home and Capricorn represents infrastructure. With Mars Rx conjunct the moon in Cancer and therefore opposite the Sun in Capricorn, this could be the astrological signature for the fires in Los Angeles, California.
Sextile Uranus Retrograde in Taurus at 23 degrees
Uranus is the planet of sudden insights, out of the box thinking, doing things differently, individuality, freedom and unexpected events or opportunities. It could be you have a sudden realization about your resources or value system (Taurus related things) as it relates to your home environment, family, ancestry, and are really feeling supported to do things differently. Or it could be that an unexpected event or opportunity shows ups, but since its a sextile you have to capitalize on it. Perhaps a financial opportunity shows up or a way to express more freedom or individuality in the home.
On a larger scale, Uranus Retrograde can represent reassessment of progress or strategies and values, inner revolutions, changes in political systems or ideologies. In a sextile this reassessment or change is supportive. I could perhaps see some reassessment of political systems or ideologies surrounding the fires and the political decisions that contributed to the massive losses that occurred in California. I could also potentially see this as the reassessment of strategies again with President Trump in all his current discussion of land and territories.
Trine to Neptune in Pisces at 27 degrees
This trine is bringing incredible intuition, enlightenment, and emotional healing to whatever needs healing in the Cancer areas of our lives. Anywhere where we have been disillusioned will become clear. Anything that we need to let go of, any family patterns, subconscious belief patterns, repressed negative emotions will rise to the surface to be seen, loved, and released. While in its lowest vibration Neptune can bring confusion and delusion, in its highest vibration, it brings psychic abilities, intuition, divine connection, emotional healing, compassion and love of the highest order. Whatever needs healing right now is being supported in that.
On a larger scale, on the shadow side it can represent mass deception, propaganda, scandals, and things of the sort, but with this in a trine to the Full Moon and Mars Rx I see this as the uncovering of these things. The Full Moon is shining a light on all the mass deception and scandals that have been working against us so it can be seen and released.
Side note: Neptune rules escapism and addiction, so if this is something that you struggle with, just keep that in mind – the desire to escape and feed into addictions may be heightened right now.
Trine to North Node (true) in Pisces at 29 degrees
The “true” North Node shifted into Pisces a few days ago where it will spend the next 18 months or so. The North Node in our personal charts represents our life purpose, soul’s growth and the direction you are encouraged to move toward in this lifetime. On a collective level though, it indicates where we are currently evolving and moving towards as a group. We just spent the last 18 months with the North Node in Aries helping us learn (along with Chiron in Aries) about how to be unapologetically ourselves. We learned where we may have kept ourselves small for the sake of others. We learned or re-learned how to effectively assert ourselves. We learned where we may be too strong or where we may be too weak in our sense of identity. We learned how to claim the space we take up in this world and that we deserve, each and every one of us, to take up that space. Now, with this moving into Pisces, the sign of universal love, compassion, unity, surrender, connection to the divine and to all things, our collective journey is going to be learning how to embrace our unique individual selves while seeing and understanding and innerstanding that we are just a small part of the whole. Our mission is to learn how integrate our ego and our identity and the importance of being exactly who we are into the concept of being just a small tiny sliver of a part of the whole. To realize that although we may be tiny in the grand scheme, everything we do makes a difference and has a ripple effect because we are all connected and we are all one. To realize our mass importance, but to realize that everyone and everything is just as important and deserves just as much compassion and grace as we do, and that we are all children of God. With the trine to Mars Rx who rules Aries, and the N. Node just coming out of Aries, I believe this is a signal that Mars Rx wants us to do a final evaluation of any patterns of self-importance perhaps that we need to let go of before we move forward with really learning how to integrate ourselves into the importance of the collective.
I will be doing a whole video and post on the Pisces/Aries energy of 2025, but it is interesting to note that while the North Node is moving from Aries to Pisces, later this year we will be having Saturn and Neptune move from Pisces to Aries, then retrograde back into Pisces, before moving back into Aries for good in 2026. So over the next 18 months, there is this big tango with the Aries and Pisces lessons and we are meant to learn how to integrate them both. In a nutshell, I believe Saturn and Neptune moving into Aries is going to continue to unearth all the ways in which we as a collective have been deceived – by our governments, corporations, religious organizations, all of it – and how we need to reclaim our power (Aries) all while learning to surrender and let go of needing to know all the details (N. Node in Pisces, S. Node in Virgo) and trust in our own intuition, our own higher power and really learning to use discernment. The next 1-2 years, especially, but even after that is going to be wild and it’s going to be difficult to know what’s true and real, what’s fake, and hard to know what direction to go, so learning to trust and surrender to our higher power and intuition and learning the tools of discernment is going to be key. But first, we have to release any notions of being better than anybody else (Mars Rx trining N. Node moving out of Aries into Pisces), any emotions that we haven’t dealt with, any lower vibrations of the Aries energy in order to do this successfully and this full moon is highlighting all that.
