The Autumn Equinox arrived yesterday, September 22, opening a new astrological season—and setting a tone that carries us toward the Winter Solstice.
Yesterday we crossed one of the four great turning points of the year.
The Sun entered Libra at the Autumn Equinox, marking the beginning of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Here in Colorado, the exact Equinox occurred at approximately 6:05 p.m. MDT.
An Equinox is a threshold—a moment when light and darkness meet in near-equal measure before the balance begins to shift. Astrologically, the Equinox chart can also be read as a symbolic weather report for the coming season, setting the tone from now until the Winter Solstice.
But this season did not begin with quiet, perfectly measured balance.
The Sun entered Libra while moving into an opposition with Neptune and a trine with Pluto. Venus, the ruler of Libra, is in Scorpio and separating from a square with Pluto. Mars is finishing its journey through Cancer, and on September 26, the Moon becomes full in Aries.
This is not balance for the sake of keeping everyone comfortable.
This is balance that asks us to tell the truth.
The Sun Enters Libra: Learning the Difference Between Peace and Balance
When the Sun enters Libra, our collective attention shifts toward relationships, fairness, cooperation, reciprocity and the agreements that connect us.
Libra is symbolized by the scales. It notices both sides. It considers how one person’s choices affect another. It seeks beauty, proportion and a solution that people can live with.
At its healthiest, Libra teaches us how to remain ourselves while also making space for someone else.
But Libra’s shadow can appear when maintaining harmony becomes more important than maintaining honesty. We may over-accommodate, avoid necessary conflict or keep weighing every possible perspective until we lose touch with what we actually think, feel or want.
That distinction matters this year because the Equinox Sun did not enter Libra alone. It immediately became part of a much larger conversation.
The Equinox Sun Opposes Neptune: Can We See Clearly?
As the Sun entered Libra, it approached an opposition with Neptune retrograde in early Aries.
Oppositions create awareness through contrast. They place two energies across from one another and ask us to recognize what has become polarized.
The Sun represents consciousness, identity and the organizing principle around which we make decisions. Neptune dissolves boundaries. It governs imagination, intuition, spirituality, compassion, longing, idealization and—when expressed less consciously—confusion, projection and escapism.
With the Sun in Libra opposite Neptune in Aries, we may find ourselves asking:
- Am I responding to the person or situation that actually exists—or to the version I hoped would exist?
- Am I practicing compassion, or am I abandoning myself?
- Is this a genuine compromise, or am I avoiding a difficult truth?
- Is my intuition speaking, or are fear and fantasy filling in missing information?
Neptune can make the edges of a situation difficult to define. Under this influence, assumptions may feel like facts and hopes may temporarily appear more convincing than evidence.
That does not make Neptune “bad.” Neptune can open imagination, empathy and spiritual awareness. It can help us sense what cannot be explained through logic alone.
But this season asks us to pair intuition with discernment.
Not everything needs an immediate answer. Sometimes clarity arrives when we stop forcing certainty and allow the fog to move.
The Equinox Sun Trines Pluto: The Courage to Change What We Can No Longer Ignore
At the same time, the Libra Sun forms a supportive trine with Pluto retrograde in Aquarius.
Trines describe energy that flows readily. Pluto brings depth, transformation, psychological truth, power and the process of releasing what has outlived its purpose.
The Sun–Pluto trine gives this Equinox chart considerably more strength than its soft Libra imagery might suggest. Beneath the questions and uncertainty, something is becoming undeniable.
We may be ready to change a relationship pattern, reclaim authority over our own choices or recognize where an agreement has become unequal.
Pluto in Aquarius also widens the lens. This is not only about individual partnerships. It asks us to examine the systems, communities and group expectations that shape our behavior.
Where have we confused belonging with conformity?
Where have we given away personal power in exchange for acceptance?
What could become possible if we stopped maintaining a pattern simply because everyone has become accustomed to it?
The trine does not necessarily force change. It creates an opening. We still have to choose whether we will use it.
The Sun Sextiles Mars: Balance Must Eventually Become Action
The Equinox Sun also forms a sextile with Mars in late Cancer.
Sextiles are opportunities. They offer cooperation between two planets, but we usually have to participate consciously to make use of them.
Mars represents action, desire, assertion, anger and the instinct to protect. In Cancer, Mars acts through emotion. It protects the home, family, personal history and the tender places beneath our defenses.
The Sun–Mars sextile tells us that Libra’s conversations are meant to lead somewhere. We are not being asked to contemplate balance indefinitely. We are being given an opportunity to make decisions that protect what truly matters.
The challenge is acting from emotional honesty rather than emotional reactivity.
Mars in Cancer may initially respond defensively. It remembers old wounds and can fight from the past instead of responding to the present. But at its best, Mars in Cancer has tremendous courage when protecting something it loves.
This season asks us to identify what is genuinely worthy of that protection.
Venus Rules the Equinox—and Venus Is in Scorpio
Because Libra is ruled by Venus, Venus becomes the ruler of the Equinox chart and an important guide to the next three months.
Venus describes relationships, attraction, values, pleasure, beauty, receptivity, self-worth and the things we consider worthy of our energy.
At the Equinox, Venus is in Scorpio.
Venus in Scorpio does not want polite, surface-level harmony. It wants emotional truth, loyalty, depth and intimacy that can withstand honesty. It asks what exists underneath the social niceties and whether trust is supported by what people actually do.
Venus is also separating from a square with Pluto, so themes involving power, control, jealousy, attachment, vulnerability, money or unequal emotional investment may still be close to the surface. A square creates friction that demands adjustment. It shows us where two drives cannot continue operating in the same way.
This does not automatically mean relationships are ending. It means the old terms may no longer be sufficient.
The Venus–Pluto story asks:
- Is this relationship reciprocal?
- Can I name what I need without trying to control the outcome?
- Am I holding on because something is healthy, or because letting go feels frightening?
- Do my financial and emotional choices reflect what I truly value?
- Where have love and power become tangled together?
Libra wants agreement. Scorpio wants truth.
The work of this season may be learning that real harmony cannot be built without both.
The Aries Full Moon: The Self Steps Back Into the Conversation
On September 26, the Moon reaches fullness in Aries at approximately 10:49 a.m. MDT. The Full Moon occurs near 3° Aries, directly opposing the Sun in Libra.
Every Full Moon is an opposition between the Sun and Moon—a moment of illumination, culmination and emotional visibility.
This Full Moon activates the Aries–Libra axis:
- Self and other
- Independence and partnership
- Instinct and consideration
- Courage and cooperation
- Personal desire and shared agreement
Aries asks, “What do I want?”
Libra asks, “How will this affect us?”
Neither question is wrong. Trouble begins when one consistently silences the other.
If we have been over-accommodating, the Aries Moon may bring anger, impatience or an unmistakable need for independence. If we have been acting without considering anyone else, the Libra Sun may reveal the relational consequences.
The goal is not to choose permanent independence over partnership—or partnership over selfhood.
The goal is to build relationships in which a real self is present.
The Full Moon Conjoins Neptune: Feelings, Intuition and Projection
The Aries Full Moon forms a close conjunction with Neptune retrograde.
Conjunctions merge planetary energies. The Moon governs feelings, needs, instincts, memory and the body’s emotional responses. Neptune dissolves boundaries and heightens sensitivity, imagination and intuition.
This can create a deeply emotional and psychically sensitive Full Moon. Dreams may feel more vivid. Symbols may carry unusual weight. Feelings we have avoided may rise suddenly and without tidy explanations.
But Neptune’s presence also reinforces the Equinox warning about projection.
A feeling can be real without every interpretation attached to that feeling being accurate.
We may sense that something is changing before we can explain what it is. Rather than rushing to make a permanent decision from a temporary wave of emotion, we can listen carefully, gather information and allow the deeper message to emerge.
The question is not, “How do I stop feeling this?”
The better question may be, “What truth is this feeling trying to bring into consciousness?”
Uranus and Pluto Support the Full Moon: A Pattern Can Finally Break
This Full Moon is not only emotional. It is connected to a powerful network of supportive aspects.
The Aries Moon forms sextiles with Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius, while the Libra Sun forms trines with both Uranus and Pluto.
Uranus represents disruption, awakening, liberation and the sudden recognition that the old way is no longer the only way.
Pluto represents deep transformation and the recovery of power.
Together, these aspects suggest that whatever becomes visible at the Full Moon is not surfacing merely to create chaos. It may reveal where real change is possible.
A sextile offers an opening. A trine provides flow. We may suddenly recognize a different choice, find language for something we have struggled to explain or become willing to leave behind a role that no longer reflects who we are.
This is especially powerful because Uranus and Pluto occupy air signs while the Sun is in Libra. New ideas, honest conversations, community connections and changes in perspective may help unlock a situation that emotion alone could not resolve.
The Full Moon may illuminate the problem, but a new way of thinking helps create the exit.
Mars Rules the Full Moon—and Mars Is in Late Cancer
Aries is ruled by Mars, making Mars the ruler of this Full Moon.
Mars remains in the final degrees of Cancer, where action is emotional, protective and deeply connected to belonging. Mars in late Cancer can feel as though it has reached the end of an emotional chapter. Something that has been defended, contained or carried privately may be ready to move.
Mars forms supportive trines with the Aries Moon and Neptune, giving the Full Moon emotional courage and intuitive momentum. It also forms a sextile with the Libra Sun, creating an opportunity to act on what is revealed.
But Mars is also approaching an opposition with Pluto.
Mars–Pluto contacts intensify willpower. They can expose power struggles, buried anger and attempts to force an outcome. They can also give us enormous stamina to confront something difficult.
The difference lies in consciousness.
Are we acting because something is genuinely aligned—or because we cannot tolerate feeling powerless?
Are we setting a boundary—or trying to punish someone for crossing one?
Are we protecting ourselves—or recreating an old battle because it feels familiar?
The Full Moon’s Mars asks for courageous action, but not reckless action. Its position in Cancer reminds us that strength does not require abandoning tenderness.

The Aries Full Moon then returns the individual self to the center of the conversation.
Mars asks us to act—but to understand what we are protecting and why.
The central question of this season may be:
How do I remain connected without abandoning myself?
Over the next three months, notice where life asks you to renegotiate the balance between:

- Peace and truth
- Togetherness and independence
- Vulnerability and self-protection

Balance is not a destination we reach once.
